“You can’t touch flowers because they’ll die quicker.” A Romanian myth about periods. So its safe to say that us Indians, are not the only people with ridiculous period myths.
Even though we live in a time where we have women shattering glass ceilings that were probably not even thought of a decade ago, we still believe in the myths that date back to ancient times.
Myths
We have 600 million women in India and yet this topic is hushed up so fast that probably this article will be longer than this country’s conversation about menstruation. Lets have a look at a few common myths regarding periods –
If you wash your hair, your flow will be less and it will affect your fertility later in life.
You can’t enter a kitchen or cook food for anyone else.
You can’t enter a place of worship.
You can only enter a place of prayer once you’ve washed your hair on or after the fourth day.
It’s impossible to get pregnant during your period
You can’t swim during your period
Menstrual blood is dirty
PMS is not real
Exercising during periods is bad for you
Periods are shameful
Are we for real? Periods are as natural as when they stop – to fuel babies who are created in that same womb. The blood which is not needed when there is no baby in the womb, is what leaves the body in the form of a period. What is more natural than this phenomenon created by God and nature from the beginning of all times????
